Streets of downtown San Rafael brought to life with painting festival By: Stephanie Weldy POSTED: Saturday, June 25, 2016 – 12:00 a.m. UPDATED: A DAY AGO Watch Video Antonio Mendez, right, of San Rafael and his mother Ana De La Roche work on their Italian chef painting. (James Cacciatore — Special to the Marin Independent Journal) Under the blistering sun, in near 90-degree temperature, Tina Hariu, of Larkspur, sketched out the rippling surface of a swimming pool on asphalt in downtown San Rafael on Saturday. Along Fifth Avenue, Hariu, 56, drew out a scene of a dog pool party – a dog, in swim goggles, pants along the pool’s edge, while another cannonballs into the water. A French bulldog also jumps in. “I’m drawing a pool party – a cool pool party,” said Hariu, a graphic artist who majored in art in college. “Basically, it’s a pool with various dogs having a great time and staying a lot cooler than I am.” More than 75 artists are participating in this year’s Italian Street Painting Marin festival at Fifth and A streets. Up to 8,000 people are anticipated to attend the two-day event over the weekend. This year’s festival took on a theme of “Ciao Bella Roma,” with some artists tailoring their art to fit the theme. Advertisement “Ciao Bella Roma, it’s about celebrating the vibrancy of the arts of Rome and what a magnificent cultural and historic period that was and the architecture and all the traditional art that came from that area, from that city and that part of the world,” said Kevin Marlatt, executive director of the art festival. Kelly Grossi, 40, was one of the artists to base her chalk art on the theme. Grossi, a decorator and restoration artist, came out from Mantova, Italy, to partake in the festival, which she said is well known in Italy. To accommodate the event’s theme, she dug into Rome’s history and settled on depicting the myth of Rome’s founding. “It’s the Italian myth – the story of Romulus and Remus,” Grossi said. “It’s the foundation of the city. This is the two brothers and the wolf – she’s the mom. In mythology, they are the foundation of the city of Roma.” David Nolen Swaim Owner Tam Realty Inc DRE-1070789 609 San Anselmo Ave San Anselmo CA 94960 415-710-5504 www.tamrealty.com
